Free calculator
Freelance hourly rate calculator.
Enter the income you want and the hours you can really bill. The calculator shows the hourly rate that gets you there.
How the rate is calculated.
Three steps, with the numbers above as the example.
What you need to earn
Your income plus costs, grossed up for taxes: ($60,000 + $3,000) ÷ (1 − 25%) = $84,000 a year.
The hours you can bill
Weeks × hours a week × billable share: 46 × 40 × 65% = 1,196 hours a year.
Your hourly rate
$84,000 ÷ 1,196 hours = $70.23 an hour. Round it up when you quote it.
Then
See what each hour earns at that rate.

Questions about hourly rates.
How do I calculate my freelance hourly rate?
Add the income you want to your yearly business costs and divide by one minus your tax rate. Then divide by the hours you can bill in a year. The calculator above does exactly that.
What is a billable share?
The part of your working time you can charge a client for. Email, finding clients, invoicing and learning take the rest, so it’s usually less than 100%.
Which taxes should I enter?
Everything you pay as a share of what clients pay you, such as income tax and self-employment contributions. Fixed monthly payments are better added to costs.
Does the calculator save what I type?
No. It runs in your browser; nothing is sent or stored.
Can Hourbloom track my hours at this rate?
Yes. Give a project this hourly rate, and Hourbloom shows today’s earnings as you work, with the week and the month one click away in the menu bar. Time tracking is free.
Make every hour count.
